Whitham James

James Whitham
Sport: Lawn Bowling
Year Inducted: 1968

Born in England, James Whitham moved to Valleyfield and then to Cornwall. He worked at the Cornwall Cotton Mill. Around 1910, he was instrumental in building the Capital and Palace movie theatres.

James then built the first lawn bowling green in Cornwall between 1939 and 1941, called the Whitham Bowling Green.

He bowled competitively in Montreal, Ottawa, Cardinal, Kingston, Brockville, and Belleville.

He found that it was very difficult to financially support lawn bowling in Cornwall, even with some City support.

James then rented the Lawn Bowling Green to the Navy club. It is assumed that the Navy club did purchase this property and later had to discontinue lawn bowling in Cornwall due to a lack of interest.

James died in 1946.
